Biogas Technology Zambia (BTZ) is investing in young professionals as the company expands its work in the bioenergy sector and implements a three and a half year programme to install 2,000 biodigester plants across Zambia.
The scale of the programme is creating a need for skills that extend beyond engineering. BTZ is recruiting and developing people in areas including Biofuels, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, marketing, business development and project support.
As part of this effort, five interns have been engaged for a six-month period, giving young professionals an opportunity to gain practical experience while contributing to the company’s operations.
The internship programme is part of BTZ’s broader approach to developing human capital for a sector that requires a range of technical and non-technical skills.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the interns is working in Administration, with responsibilities that include sourcing company grants and developing business proposals.
Biofuels Degree interns are supporting efforts to promote biogas technology to the public and source clients who can help the company achieve its target.
These roles give interns exposure to areas of work that are directly connected to the growth of a renewable energy business.
For BTZ, the value of an internship goes beyond giving a young person temporary work experience.
Building Skills for a Growing Sector
The growth of Zambia’s bioenergy sector will require professionals with different areas of expertise.
Engineers and technical specialists are needed to design and install systems, while business professionals, sales teams, project managers and communicators are needed to connect those technologies with customers and communities.
For this reason, BTZ continues to emphasise training, orientation, mentorship, teamwork and continuous learning as important parts of employee development.
Developing people also involves creating a workplace where employees understand professional conduct, confidentiality, safety, accountability, communication and teamwork.
Opportunities for Young Professionals
BTZ plans to continue providing internship opportunities to fresh graduates as its work expands.
The internship positions will change over time, allowing more young people to gain exposure to different areas of the business.
The company’s approach also means that interns can contribute to an active business rather than simply observing operations.
Their responsibilities are connected to real tasks, including developing proposals, sourcing grants, marketing biogas technology and identifying potential clients.
People at the Centre of Clean Energy
The transition to cleaner energy is often discussed in terms of technology, infrastructure and investment. But behind those areas are people who design systems, engage customers, manage projects, build installations and communicate the benefits of new technologies.
For BTZ, developing this human capacity is therefore part of preparing for the growth of Zambia’s bioenergy sector.
At Biogas Technology Zambia, creating opportunities for young people and developing talent is part of the company’s wider work in the bioenergy sector.
